North Haven Fire Department Battles 2-Alarm Fire at Manufacturing Plant

One Firefighter Hurt

NORTH HAVEN —  Chief Paul Januszewski reports that the North Haven Fire Department battled the frigid temperatures to extinguish a 2-alarm fire Monday evening at a manufacturing plant.

Firefighters responded at approximately 5 p.m. to Ulbrich Shaped Wire, located at 55 Defco Park Road, after employees called 911 to report a fire on the manufacturing floor.

The first arriving units had heavy fire showing and immediately stretched hose lines to attack the flames. The fire, which appeared to start in a single piece of machinery on the floor, did not reach the building’s high ceilings, and the sprinkler system was not activated.

Approximately 12 employees were working at the time of the fire, and they were all accounted for immediately. One firefighter was treated at the scene for injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, and no civilians were hurt.

The Hamden Fire Department provided mutual aid assistance at the scene. Fire units began to clear the scene by 7:15 p.m.

The fire is under investigation by the North Haven Fire Department. A preliminary investigation indicates that the fire was caused by a machine malfunction. Employees tried to use fire extinguishers to put out the flames before they evacuated from the building. The company estimated damages at $850,000.
